Li Yingbo, a PhD student from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM), has returned from a research programme at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). The programme was sponsored by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and focused on the application of the bacterium Salmonella typhimurium in tumor therapy. Relevant technologies will help UM to further its study of treating tumor with Chinese medicine.

HZI is a state-level scientific research organization in Germany. It mainly studies the prevention and treatment of contagious diseases and other related diseases. During her stay at HZI, Ms. Li mainly studied the application of the bacterium Salmonella typhimurium in tumor therapy with the aid of state-of-the-art technologies. Any breakthrough in this programme will help uncover the generation mechanisms of certain tumors, identify new targets of drugs, and develop new anti-tumor drugs. Now Ms. Li has returned to UM and is participating in the FDCT program (029/2007A2) which is sponsored by The Science and Technology Development Fund.

Ms. Li says that her research in Germany has not only extended her professional knowledge, but will also be helpful in performing the FDCT program (029/2007A2) of which she is a major researcher. Ms. Li expressed gratitude to her supervisor Prof. Wang Yitao, saying that without Prof. Wang’s great support and recommendation she wouldn’t have been able to obtain such a wonderful opportunity.

DAAD is among the largest government-sponsored educational organizations in the world. In addition to providing support to university students and scientists from Germany and other countries, it also aims to strengthen the bonds between domestic and overseas universities through exchange programmes and international research programmes. Every year, DAAD receives many applications from students and research personnel for exchange programmes in Germany, and only a handful of exceptionally good applicants that pass the rigorous evaluation by experts can receive full scholarships. That Ms. Li was sponsored by DAAD for her research programme at a world-class institute serves as yet another testament to the level of research excellence UM’s postgraduate students have achieved in the field.
