To promote the development of Macaology and to accelerate the establishment of relevant academic systems, the University of Macau (UM) has set relevant plans for the subject. Yesterday (2 March), the Centre for Macau Studies of UM held a seminar on Macaology which was attended by numerous renowned local scholars in the field of humanities and social science. Attendees discussed the development of Macaology and raised suggestions regarding the first international conference on Macaology due to be held in mid-April.

Macaology is a comprehensive subject that studies a wide range of Macao-related issues such as politics, economy, history, culture, and society. To promote the study of this subject, UM has already identified Macaology as a key project in social science and humanities and has set relevant plans with the aim of developing the subject into an “academic business card” of Macao.

More than 20 experts and scholars in the field, including Prof. Hao Yufan, Prof. Zhu Shoutong, Prof. Wei Chuxiong, Prof. Tang Kaijian, Prof. Hao Zhidong, Dr. Kwan Fung, Dr. Lin Guangzhi, Dr. Tang Chon Chit and Dr Ieong Hoi Keng from UM; Prof. Ieong Wan Chong and Prof. Li Changsen from IPM; Chan Su Weng from the Macao Association for Historical Education, Choi San from the Cultural Institute of Macao SAR, Fok Chi Chiu from the Macao Association of Chinese Culture and Art, and Ip Kuai Peng from the Macao Association for The Promotion of Exchange Between Asia-Pacific and Latin America, were invited to the seminar. Attendees had discussions and raised suggestions regarding a range of issues such as how to step up cooperation in the study of Macaology and how to ensure the successful organization of the first international conference on Macaology.

Co-organized by UM, Macau Foundation, and the Institute of European Studies of Macau, the first international conference on Macaology is due to be held from 15 April to 16 April. More than 80 scholars from the Chinese Mainland, US, Portugal, Germany, Cuba, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao are expected to attend the conference to have in-depth discussion on relevant issues such as how to promote the development of Macaology. The latest findings of the studies in the field will also be presented at the conference. It is reported that this conference will be the largest international academic conference on the study of Macao ever held in Macao in recent years. It will surely play a very important role in promoting the development of Macaology as well as the academic development of Macao.
