Probability Density Function Solution of Nonlinear Oscillators Subjected to Multiplicative Poisson Pulse Excitation on Velocity, a paper on the mechanics of vibration co-authored by UM professors and a PhD student, was ranked by the world-renowned Journal of Applied Mechanics among the top ten most downloaded articles between January and April 2010 and the most downloaded article in February and March 2010, showing growing international recognition of UM’s academic excellence.

Journal of Applied Mechanics is an international journal on applied mechanics founded in 1933 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). As early as the 1950s, it became an internationally-recognized authoritative journal in the field of mechanics.

This paper is among the four published journal papers co-authored by Prof. Iu Vai Pan Prof. Er Guokang, Prof. Kou Kun Pang and PhD student Zhu Haitao from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau (UM). It studies the nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems. The solution of nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems is a fundamental problem that is found in many scientific and engineering fields, such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace and astronautical engineering, statistical physics, biology, and economics. Prof. Iu and Prof. Er began to study the solution of nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems ten years ago, and their research findings are now at the forefront of the international academic scene. Based on the research findings of these two professors, Zhu Haitao’s PhD paper studies the solution of stochastic dynamic systems subjected to Poisson pulse excitation. Last year Probability Density Function Solution of Nonlinear Oscillators Subjected to Multiplicative Poisson Pulse Excitation on Velocity passed the vigorous evaluation of the paper review committee and was published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics. In February and March 2010 the paper was listed as the most downloaded article in the Journal of Applied Mechanics, reflecting the significant impact of the paper and interest of other researchers in the international academic circle.

Recently, Prof. Iu and Prof. Er have made significant progress in research on solving nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems. They have developed a methodology to transform the problem of finding the solution of a large nonlinear stochastic dynamic system with many degrees of freedom into a problem of solving a small system with much fewer degrees of freedom. Hence, the scope of possible applications is enlarged. The new progress represents an important step towards making solving large systems possible. Because of the important progress, Prof. Er was invited by Prof. Y. K. Lin, an esteemed scholar in the field of stochastic dynamics, to present a keynote lecture in the Symposium on Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamics and Control organized by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), the most authoritative organization in the field of mechanics. Due to the significance of the lecture, its content will be included in the proceedings of the symposium to be published by the internationally renowned Springer.
