The fourth PGENERAL Cup National Excellent Paper Competition on Pharmaceutical Analysis held in Shanghai has ended. Master’s graduates Xun Jun and PhD candidate Guan Jia from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM) won a second prize for their paper entitled “Comparison of polysaccharides from different Dendrobium species using saccharide mapping”.

Launched in 2004, the PGENERAL Cup National Excellent Paper Competition on Pharmaceutical Analysis is co-sponsored by the Pharmaceutical Analysis Committee of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, the Editorial Board of the Chinese Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis and Beijing Purkinje General Instrument Co. Ltd. The competition represents the current status and research trends of pharmaceutical analysis in China and is one of the most important events in the field of pharmaceutical analysis. Approximately 100 representatives from research institutes for the control of pharmaceutical and biological products, universities, and hospitals attended the conference. Of the 87 papers collected in the proceeding, 36 were selected for presentation at the conference. Finally, one first prize, five second prizes, and nine third prizes were awarded.

The research project on which the award-winning paper is based is co-funded by UM and the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR. Their study unprecedentedly employed saccharide mapping to characterize the polysaccharides in Dendrobium from different species and locations, which is beneficial for the quality control of traditional Chinese medicines based on bio-macromolecules. Saccharide mapping was also adopted in a previous research project, and the paper on that project received a first prize at the “SHIMADZU CUP” Symposium of National Excellent Paper Competition on Pharmaceutical Analysis 2009.

Quality control of Chinese medicine is a key for the modernization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicines. The impressive achievements of ICMS have attracted widespread attention. Prof. Li Shaoping is the supervisor of Mr. Xun Jun and Guan Jia. Besides Xun and Guan, Prof. Li’s other postgraduate students have also won numerous prizes, including the second and third prizes at the PGENERAL Cup National Excellent Paper Competition on Pharmaceutical Analysis held in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
