Prof. Ben U Seng Pan, Prof. Elvis Mak Pui In and Dr. Terry Sin Sai Weng, of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), recently received the second-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the highest honour in the field of science and technology in mainland China, for its advanced chip design technology and development project. This is the first time that academics from Macao SAR have been conferred such a prestigious award, and the three awardees are all core members of the UM’s microelectronics research team.
The trio received the award at the 2011 State Science and Technology Awards (SSTAs) ceremony, which was organized by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao, and several other state leaders including Li Changchun and Li Keqiang attended the ceremony and presented the awards. Ms. Gao Yan, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, and Dr. Tong Chi Kin, president of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), also attended the ceremony and witnessed the important moment.
Macao natives, Prof. U, Prof. Mak and Dr. Sin received their higher education and became teaching staff at UM. They consider the award a great encouragement, saying they will continue to work hard to make contributions to science and technology development in Macao and in mainland China.
The awarded project can be applied in electronic products such as mobile phones and televisions. By enhancing the performance and speed of the products and also by reducing their size and power consumption, it is expected to create considerable economic benefits.
