The first batch of the University of Macau’s (UM) Honours College (HC) students graduated this May. Almost all of them were either employed by famous multinational companies, such as Deloitte, Jardine Matheson, or accepted by top universities, including Oxford and Cornell. Many received job offers before their graduation. With the advent of a new academic year, HC today (12 September) held a Ceremony of Presentation of Certificate of Admission to welcome forty-two outstanding Class of 2015 students selected from different faculties. HC Dean Prof. Mok Kai Meng said at the ceremony that all HC students enjoy a unique opportunity for multi-disciplinary studies, research projects and creative activities on and off campus, as well as horizon-broadening international experiences.

HC selects diligent students with an academic bent, and provides the selected students with a specially designed Honours Programme, a wide diversity of learning activities, exciting opportunities for research and community service, and horizon-broadening international experiences. This year’s forty-two students, of eighteen different majors, are the fourth batch accepted by HC. They were selected from over 110 candidates from six faculties.

Prof. Mok said at the ceremony that the university was very encouraged and proud that the first batch of thirty-nine HC students, who graduated this May, did expressively well in terms of post-graduation development. All of them were either employed by famous multinational companies in the sectors of their major areas of study, including Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Arup, Jardine Matheson, DFS Galleria, etc., or accepted by world-renowned top-tier universities. Twenty-one were accepted by top graduate schools, and among them, fourteen went to the University of Oxford, the University of Edinburgh, Durham University, the University of Minho, Cornell University, Duke University, New York University, the University of Illinois, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, etc. Three of the seven graduates who continued graduate studies in Macao were directly admitted into PhD programmes upon completing bachelor studies.

Prof. Mok added that the second batch of HC students, the Class of 2013, are not to be outshone. Early this year they went abroad to study for one semester at renowned universities, including Boston College, the University of Rochester, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and the University of Coimbra. They overcame language barriers and gained a great deal from their interaction with people from different cultural backgrounds. Prof. Mok looks forward to the completion of the new UM campus, and hopes the excellent learning environment on the new campus could help foster a closer learning community for more academic successes. He also encouraged students to actively participate in the Research Experience Programme to gain knowledge and experience so that one day they could make contributions to society.

HC provides a specially designed programme with leadership as its core, covering “Self-Discovery”, “Development of Leadership Skills”, “Leadership from a Global Perspective”, and so on. HC students enjoy a unique opportunity to conduct multi-disciplinary studies, participate in research projects, creative activities and community service, and to meet with leaders from different walks of life. They also have the opportunity to study abroad for one term during their junior year, to gain international experiences.
