This year, the University of Macau (UM) continues to attract outstanding students through various admission schemes, including the Principals’ Recommended Admission Scheme, the Preferential Admission Scheme, and the UM Outstanding Student-Athletes Admission Award Scheme, in order to produce graduates with a diverse range of skills to contribute to the economic diversification of Macao.

This year UM received nearly 9,000 applications for its undergraduate programmes, and approximately 1,700 students were admitted.

The Lotus Scholarships are offered to students admitted through the Principals’ Recommended Admission Scheme. This year, 12 students are awarded the University of Macau Grand Lotus Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship will be admitted to the Honours College in their second year of study with exemption from examinations, and will also receive special guidance and training from the deans and professors in their faculties. 45 students are awarded the University of Macau Golden Lotus Scholarship or the University of Macau Silver Lotus Scholarship.

This year UM continues to admit students through the Preferential Admission Scheme. The target audience of this admission scheme are applicants with special talents in academic, athletic, musical or other areas. Qualified applicants are granted bonus points to their entrance examination marks.

Seven students have been admitted through the UM Outstanding Student-Athletes Admission Award Scheme. The purpose of this scholarship is two-fold—to encourage outstanding student athletes to pursue further studies, and also to motivate them to surpass themselves and excel both athletically and academically.

The number of non-local students sees an increase from last year. Of the 1,700 new students, over 300 are non-local students from around the world, including Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, Mongolia, Bengal, East Timor, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. UM hopes that a diverse international mix in the student body will help to create a vibrant multicultural atmosphere on campus.
