Prof Liu Jianhong from the University of Macau (UM) Department of Sociology recently officiated at the opening ceremony of the Eighth Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society (ACS) held in Beijing. He also delivered a keynote speech, titled ‘Developing Asian Criminology Paradigm: Theoretical Models and Future Directions’.

Prof Liu is the president of the Scientific Commission of International Society for Criminology, and chairman of the General Assembly of the ACS. His presentation was focused on the development of the theoretical dimensions of the Asian criminological paradigm. It also discussed the three stages of theoretical evolution and the future of theoretical research in Asian criminology.

The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Crime Prevention and Control from the Perspective of Globalisation’. The conference consisted of 27 sessions, each devoted to a specific legal topic, including restorative justice, drug-related crime, cybercrime, organised crime, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, and crime prevention. 13 PhD and master’s students of criminology from UM presented their papers at the conference.

This year’s conference was organised by the ACS and jointly hosted by the Criminological Society of China and the Tianjin Society of Criminology. The event attracted more than 230 scholars from approximately 20 countries and regions.
