UM holds EU Short-Film Challenge 2016

The European Union Short-Film Challenge 2016 was held recently at the University of Macau (UM). The event included the screening of 22 films produced by students from UM’s Department of Communication who have enrolled in the Video Workshop course. The short films that won the competition were Outlander, directed by Lam Sin Tong, Jiang Minling, and Kwok Fu Wa, and The Real Beauty Be Yourself, directed by Cory Chio, Sandra Mo, Tania Tan, and Betty Tam.

The theme of this year’s competition was migration. The issue of migrants and refugees has been on the top of the political agenda in European Union in the last two years. The students were challenged to produce short films that revolve around this theme. They used documentary and narrative approaches to explore the topic of migrants in Macao.

This is the third year that the Academic European Union Programme in Macao (EUAP-M) has co-organised this competition with UM’s Department of Communication. 75 students were involved in the production of the films.

The 2016 EU Short Film Challenge is one of the activities organised by the EUAP-M. Established in 2012, the EUAP-M is a partnership between UM and the Institute of European Studies of Macau, and is co-financed by the European Union. It aims to help Macao’s general public, in particular, students of all levels, to better understand the EU.
